Sen. Nelson Asks For Federal Help For Olinda Park Victims

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Senator Bill Nelson has requested two federal agencies help check kids exposed to lead in the soil at Olinda Park. The park has since been closed by Miami-Dade County.

Nelson visited a health center Friday in Miami that is offering free blood test for kids who may be dealing with effects from lead exposure.

"If the county or state needs any help in taking care of this situation, I've asked the federal environment and health agencies to monitor and stand ready to assist," Nelson said in a statement.

The free testing program is set to end Saturday, but Nelson asked the county to look at keeping the program open. So far, 135 kids have been tested and 22,000 fliers have been sent out to the community.

CBS4's Michele Gillen talked with Nelson about what the CBS4 I-Team found and will have more results next week on CBS4.
