BSO Identifies Capsized Boat Victim

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami.com) – The Broward Sheriff's Office identified 51-year-old Jose Torres of Ft. Lauderdale as the victim of a boat accident when powerful storms moved across South Florida Thursday night.

According to BSO, Torres and 63-year-old Mercedes Solivan of Plantation were fishing about 1.5 miles off shore when the storm caught them by surprise.

The powerful wind and choppy water capsized the 13 ft. boat, throwing the men into the water. Official say neither of them were wearing life jackets and were not good swimmers.

Solivan was able to cling to the boat until a passing boat came to his aid.

Torres was not able to hold on to the side of the boat and he eventually slipped under the water. His body was found by boaters near just north of the Hillsboro Inlet about 35-40 minutes later.
