James Jones Becomes Free Agent

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – When the Miami Heat need a big shot from the perimeter next season, they won't be able to kick the ball out to James Jones. The forward told the Heat Wednesday that he will not exercise his player option and will instead become a free agent.

It won't be Jones' first step into free agency. He was waived by the Heat last year as the free agency free-for-all to land Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Amar'e Stoudemire started. He was re-signed by the Heat 21 days later.

Jones would have earned $1.4 million this year if he had exercised his player option.

Jones averaged just less than six points per game and shot nearly 43 percent from three-point land. He started eight games last season and played in 81 games overall. Jones also hit several big shots in the playoffs to spark Heat victories.
