Broward's Interim Superintendent Gets $16 K Pay Raise
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4)-- Come the end of June, Broward County School District's chief operating officer will get a $16 thousand pay raise when he takes over for Superintendent Jim Notter.
Donnie Carter, 67, has been a district employee for over a decade and will become the interim superintendent for the next three months after Notter officially retires on June 30th.
His pay raise will bring his annual earnings to $198,000, still considerably lower than Notter's $299,000 salary, according to CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald.
Still, some members of the School Board questioned this decision, especially with the districts sticky financial situation in mind.
"I think it's a bad management decision," Board Member Dave Thomas told the paper on Tuesday.
Thomas, along with fellow board members Nora Rupert and Patricia Good, voted against the raise, but lost in a 6-3 decision.
Notter, 64, who resigned earlier this year, said that his decision was unrelated to the negative Grand Jury report which condemned the school district for mismanagement and wasteful spending.
Carter will fill Notter's shoes for the time being, as the board conducts a nationwide search for a new superintendent, a position which Carter cannot apply for. During his stint, Carter will have to deal with the $170 million shortfall in the budget and will be held responsible for opening the 2011-12 school year.
