ORLANDO (CBS4)- A renowned forensic expert said the autopsy done on 2-year-old Caylee Anthony was “shoddy.”
Dr. Werner Spitz gave testimony Saturday in the trial of Casey Anthony, the Florida mother charged with murder in Caylee’s death.
Spitz has been an expert witness in several high-profile cases, including that of O.J. Simpson. He said it was a failure that Caylee’s head was not opened during the official autopsy. Spitz conducted a second autopsy afterward.
The defense entered its third day calling witnesses in the murder trial of Casey Anthony.
Testimony resumed Saturday morning after jurors heard from just one witness on Friday, a bug expert the defense called to challenge findings made by the prosecution’s expert.
Forensic entomologist Timothy Huntington testified that the stain on the carpet of Anthony’s trunk did not resemble human decomposition stains he’s previously seen. He also said that the stench from the trunk came from a bag of trash and was not the decaying body of toddler Caylee Anthony, as the prosecution contends.
Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty. The defense said the girl drowned in her grandparents’ swimming pool. The prosecution contends that Caylee was suffocated by duct tape placed over her nose and mouth.
Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in Caylee’s summer 2008 death. Her skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area near her grandparents’ home that December
The court adjourned Saturday afternoon. The case will resume Monday morning.
