Miami Man Makes Health Care Fraud Fugitive List

MIAMI (CBS4) -- A Miami man convicted of Medicare fraud is listed on the federal government's list of wanted health care fugitives.

Gustavo Adolfo Smith was convicted in 2008 of billing Medicare for nearly $3 million in bogus claims under his company MedStar Services. Shortly after his sentencing, Smith's electronic monitoring device alerted authorities that he had fled. Authorities later learned he flew to the Dominican Republic.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general bumped Smith near the top of the fugitive list. The list, which includes a website with suspects' photos, was launched in April.

Authorities hope it will drive callers to the tip hotline. Taxpayers absorb the roughly $60 to $90 billion Medicare fraud costs each year.
