Police: Mother Drove Off Julia Tuttle Trying To Drown Children

MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) - A mother is accused of trying to drown her two children by driving her car into Biscayne Bay Thursday night.

Miami Beach Police say a 24-year-old woman was driving eastbound on the Julia Tuttle expressway. She was seen swerving to the right, and into the bay. Inside the car were her two children: a 7-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son.

When police arrived, they say they found the young woman trying to drown her 7-year-old daughter by pushing her underwater.

Police say they immediately jumped in to grab the girl. They pulled her out. They also grabbed the 2-year-old son, who was in the car.

CBS4 News spoke with three men who say the woman tried to bite them as they attempted to rescue the child.

The mother and two children were transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital for observation. A Miami Fire Rescue spokesperson says they are suffering from minor injuries.

The Department of Children and Familes is investigating. A DCF spokesperson says the department has no prior history with this family.
