One Dead, One Wounded In BSO Involved Shooting

LAUDERDALE LAKES (CBS4) - A Ft. Lauderdale teen is dead, his brother wounded after they were shot by Broward Sheriff's deputies early Monday morning in Lauderdale Lakes.

"Just six shots then I saw the cop cars," said Henry Green who heard the gunshots.

A.J. Brown also heard the shots. "I heard them say get down, get down, get down. They had the door open, guns were drawn."

According to the sheriff's office, around 1:30 a.m. deputies were clearing the scene of a home invasion robbery in the 47 hundred block of NW 24th Court.

Homeowner Timothy Parker had told BSO deputies that two masked men broke into his home around midnight stealing the money from his waistband.

"After they took my money, they tried to steal the gold from my teeth," Parker recalled. "I pushed the gun away and that spooked them and they ran away."

As detectives were clearing the scene, they were flagged down by 25-year old Octavius Sapp near the Chase Bank on W. Oakland Park Boulevard.

Sapp told the deputies green Mazda had been carjacked at gunpoint by several people who had driven up in a white van.

Deputies searched the area and found the van and car at Woodsdale Oaks, an apartment complex in the 25 hundred block of NW 49th Avenue.  When the deputies went to confront the carjacking suspects in the van, the driver of the van reportedly tried to run them down.

"Shots were fired. Two of the suspects were injured and transported to Broward General," said BSO spokesperson Kayla Concepcion.

"Even despite almost being run over, they (deputies) performed CPR on that individual," Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

Terrence Boatwright, 18, died at the hospital; his brother 17-year old Ladarrius was treated and released into the custody of the sheriff's office.

Three other people who were in the van were also taken into custody; 18-year old Obrian Merthyl, 17-year old Brian Michel and 16-year old Stephen Francois. All four teens face a number of charges including felony murder, carjacking, armed robbery and possession of stolen property. Ladarrius Boatwright's criminal history includes armed carjacking, robbery and armed robbery.

The sheriff's office has not said if they were connected to the home invasion robbery. They did say, however, that detectives were looking to see if they were involved in a number of strong armed robberies that have taken place in the county in the last month.
