Hispanics Now Make Up A Quarter Of Florida's Population

MIAMI (CBS4) - A diverse group of Hispanics now account for about a quarter of Florida's nearly 19 million year round residents.

According to U.S. Census numbers released on Thursday, Central and South American populations in the state grew by more than a half million people. Cubans and Puerto Ricans grew in almost equal numbers. Cubans added about 380,000 new residents, while Puerto Ricans grew by more than 365,000 new residents.

Census data also shows that Floridians have gotten older in the past decade.

The median age is 40.7, compared to 38.7 a decade ago.

More unrelated Floridians are living together and the percentage of households with married couples declined in the past decade.
