Floridians Have Millions In Unclaimed Property

MIAMI (CBS4) – Tax day has come and gone and while many of you wait for a refund, there may be more money that needs to be returned to you.

The state has more than $1 billion in unclaimed money and property it wants to return to you. It’s mostly from dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance, and utility companies, securities, and trust holdings.

But it’s not just cash that you can collect. There’s unclaimed property inside the state’s vault that includes diamonds, gold, silver bars, watches and other jewelry.

In addition, there are stamp collections and sports memorabilia that has been discovered in abandoned safety deposit boxes.

In Miami-Dade County alone, between cash and unclaimed property, there’s $252.7 million waiting to be claimed. Broward County has $159 million in unclaimed cash and property, while Monroe has $7.2 million waiting to be returned.

Even the Miami Dolphins, Florida Panthers, and Florida Marlins are owed a collective $27,281.61!
