Gov. Scott Authorizes Petition Against EPA

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4)-Gov. Rick Scott is wading into an ongoing dispute between the Environmental Protection Agency and some Florida business groups, utilities and local governments.

Scott authorized the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to file a petition Friday asking the EPA to rescind its 2009 decision to force the state of Florida to clean up its waters. The EPA's action was the result of a lawsuit brought by several environmental groups.

The petition also requested that the EPA withdraw their determination before any further is action is taken, according to the News Service of Florida.

"I look forward to working with the EPA to reach an agreement that will promote clean water standards in the way that makes the most sense for our state," Scott said in a statement.

The EPA is trying to get Florida to meet certain water quality standards for its lakes, rivers and streams. But many oppose these federal mandates, saying it could cost billions to implement.
