Former BSO Deputy Arrested in Fatal Ax

Former Broward Sheriff's deputy Franklyn McCurrie turned himself at the Broward County Jail this afternoon on a charge of vehicular homicide and four misdemeanor counts of reckless driving.

Prosecutors allege McCurrie was speeding on his way to call when he hit a car carrying Cara Catlin, 14. The accident occurred on January 23, 2010 in Oakland Park.

A grand jury indicted him last week but the warrant was unsealed today.

Court documents reveal that the deputy -- Franklyn McCurrie -- was driving his BSO-marked white Ford Crown Victoria approximately 89 miles an hour when he hit a Honda driven by Catlin's step-sister on January 23. The accident occurred on North Dixie Highway and NE 56th Street in Oakland Park. The posted speed limit in the area is 40 miles per hour.

According to the documents, the step-sister was making a left turn on NE 56th Street when the deputy hit her car. The impact split the Honda in two and killed Catlin.

Witnesses say the deputy did not have his emergency lights or sirens activated. McCurrie was headed to provide backup to a fellow deputy conducting a traffic stop nearby.
