Welfare Drug Testing Bill Advances

MIAMI (CBS4) – A Florida Senate bill requiring new applicants for a form of welfare assistance to get drug tests at their own expense moved forward Wednesday.

The bill was passed by the Senate budget subcommittee Wednesday on a 5-2 party line vote. All Republicans supported the measure while both Democrats voted against it.

Republican Senator Steve Oelrich sponsored the bill and said it’s fair for welfare recipients to get drug tested because many, taxpayers are screened by their employers.

Senate Democrat Nan Rich said it’s unfair to make poor people pay for drug tests that can cost up to $35.

Rich also cited a national study that showed almost no difference in the rate of drug use between welfare recipients and other people.

If the state wants people drug tested then the state should pay for it. Most people on welfare do not have $35 extra laying around for drug testing. And how often are these people to be drug tested? Once a year?

    1. Indhira says:

I agree, if government wants them tested then they should pay for the test. And I bet the clinics/labs allowed or recommended are somehow tied to Tricky Ricky’s wife… What a scam! He just won’t stop trying to make millions at others expense…

  2. MiamiMex says:

Well I am a Democrat and I agree 100% with drug testing for people getting free money from the gov.

Not only that, as has been said before, a lot of people don’t realize that for every joint they smoke, for every line of cocaine they snort, they have Mexican blood on their hands. I wish there was a way for them to see the deaths they are causing by getting stoned.

    1. Florida Fire says:

My pot is grown in South Florida, so I can toke it easy knowing that there is no Mexican or any other blood on my hands. Mexican pot is awful anyway.

More to the point… this law is unconstitutional and will never pass because it places undue financial burden upon WELFARE recipients. As if we needed further proof that Rick Scott is a greedy moron, here it is.

  3. Jon W says:

This is the ONLY thing I agree with that Rick Scott has done !! Everything else he is doing is a total DISGRACE to the people of Florida. His budget is actually going to cost many jobs!! So much for his B.S. pitch about creating 700,00 jobs in 7 years,, and just how many will be lost on the flip side!!!! IDIOT !

    1. GAIN AND AGEIN says:

      I SECOND THAT!!!!

Hope BALDY regains his Savvy, and soooon

  4. AL MAC says:

who’s benefittin from the testing that’s being done”THE GOVENOR OR SOME OF HIS CRONIES” HE’S ALL ABOUT MONEY FOR HIM AND THE GOOD OLD BOYS THEY KNOW HOW TO APPEASE THE THE HARD WORKING PEOPLE THAT NOT FEELING THE WELFARE SYSTEM OR UNDERSTANDIN THAT SOME PEOPLE REALLY NEED THE HELP. THE RICH WIL GET RICHER AS THEY HAVE US FIGHTING EACH OTHER.

  5. indhira says:

In the end this will punish the children… The children of drug addicts are innocent and should not be punished for the bad decisions their parents make. So now Rick Scott will starve a group of children and deny them benefits. Some people forget that the assistance is for the CHILDREN!! So what’s the contingency plan for this children? They should just go hungry? This was not a well-thought-of plan, and it’s meant to punish, not help people with addiction problems, which is what they need… help, not punishment!

    1. GAIN AND AGEIN says:

      Indhira:

Children are always the VICTIMS for their PARENTS NEGLIGENCE…

      2 Bad, 2 SAD…….

      1. Indhira says:

        Sad but true…

  6. ringer says:

Yes drug testing should be done. What will stop them having someone else take the test for them. The main that needs to be done is put a cap on how many children you can file for. If I choose to have another child I can’t go to my boss and demand more money while they can go to the local welfare office and get more benefits. It’s just not right.

  7. MiamiMex says:

    THIS IS A GREAT IDEA.

WHY SHOULD DRUG ADDICTS GET FREE TAX MONEY?

GET OVER THE POLITICS – I DON’T LIKE SCOTT EITHER BUT AS YOU RAGE AND HATE YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT —> THIS COUNTRY IS SINKING FAST – IF WE DON’T STOP GIVING THE TAX PAYERS’ MONEY AWAY TO CORRUPT EXECUTIVES AND LAZY DRUG ADDICTS WE ARE GOING TO BE A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

  8. GAIN AND AGEIN says:

    Mr. Miami Mex….

    Agreed

These are POLITICIANS, setting you UP!
