BSO Sergeant & Wife Charged With Prescription Fraud

WEST PALM BEACH - (CBSMiami.com) - A Broward Sheriff's Office sergeant and his wife spent Friday night in jail for their alleged roles in doctor shopping.

Sgt. John Goodbread, 42, and his wife Heather Goodbread, 37, are accused of obtaining prescriptions for Oxycodone and other pain killers from several doctors and trafficking the pain killer, according to a Palm Beach Sheriff's Office arrest report.

Goodbread worked in the Dania Beach district and has been suspended with pay, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. He has worked for BSO since 1989.

The arrest report goes on to say that from April of 2009 to December of 2010, "John Goodbread obtained prescriptions for the..narcotic Oxycodone, from multiple doctors' offices…This practice is more commonly known as 'doctor shopping.'"

The investigation began when a manager representing one of Goodbread's doctors called authorities to alert them of the possibility that the couple had been doctor shopping.

John Goodbread is accused of filling more than 30 prescriptions for Oxycodone, Oxycontin and Hydrocodone. Heather Goodbread allegedly bought the same pills and in addition purchased Morphine Sulfate several times from April 2009 to February 2011, the report states.

Neighbors in the West Palm Beach neighborhood where the couple lived say they were stunned by the allegations.

"That's shocking to me 'cause he don't strike me as that type," one neighbor who declined to be named told CBS4's Gio Benitez.
