Sun Belt Conference Looking To Expand

MIAMI (CBS4) - The conference that is home to both Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University may be getting a little bigger.

The Sun Belt Conference wants to add another school for football, according to CBSMiami.com news partners the Miami Herald. The conference only wants to consider schools that are already Division I schools and aligned with another conference.

The conference started as a basketball league in 1976, but added football in 2001. It will become a 10-team football conference in 2012 when South Alabama's football team jumps to Division I.

The Herald reported that the league could be looking to add a school from the WAC or the MAC. The WAC has already lost most of its members and will have only seven teams left by 2012.

One current WAC school, Louisiana Tech, has a history with the Sun Belt Conference and could be the target of any possible Sun Belt expansion.
