Justice Department Reviewing Info About Miami Police Shootings

WASHINGTON (CBS4) - Assistant U.S. Attorney General Ronald Welch has informed South Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson that the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department would review information she had provided about the Miami police shootings.

After the review, the Justice Department will then decide "what, if any, action is appropriate pursuant to their statutory authority.

Congresswoman Wilson (D-FL) sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate the use of deadly force and the follow-up investigations following the incidents. Wilson noted that at least two of the seven men killed by Miami police had no weapons.

The shootings have generated community anger towards Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito and Mayor Tomas Regalado. City Manager Tony Crapp is still waiting on a report from a retired FBI chief that evaluates the department before he makes any more regarding Exposito.

The Civilian Investigative Panel has requested Exposito turn over all records related to the first shooting, but so far, Exposito has denied the requrest.
