FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Forty-three-year-old Mario Careaga who has been arrested for his role in an accident that killed a Miami Heat dancer last year bonded out of jail Friday afternoon, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said.
The accident happened in September 2010 when authorities say Careaga was driving west on East Sunrise Blvd in his 2009 Mercedes when he drove out of his lane and struck Nancy Lopez-Ruiz from behind.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the force of the crash threw 22-year-old Lopez-Ruiz 137 feet in the air. The Heat dancer died at the scene of the accident.
Careaga was released on bond Friday afternoon. He faces a slew of charges including careless driving, DUI Manslaughter, DUI Property Damage, unlawful blood alcohol manslaughter and unlawful blood alcohol property damage.
Careaga who is an executive with Seitlin Benefits has hired Broward defense attorney David Bogenschutz.
"It's a terrible, tragic incident. Once we learn about all the facts, we can make an intelligent decision on how to resolve the case if it can be resolved. This has irrevocably changed the lives of two families," Bogenschutz told CBS4.
