Palmetto Expressway Reopens Following Accident
MIAMI - (CBS4) - Both lanes of the Palmetto Expressway reopened following a major shut down of the highway Friday afternoon after an accident that injured at least two people and one child.
Images from Chopper 4, showed drivers stuck in traffic getting out of their cars as they watched a rescue helicopter transport two people to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
Florida Highway Patrol Spokesman Alex Annunziato said the accident involved a westbound Silver Sonata at Northwest 67th Avenue. The Sonata suddenly lost control and struck a Chevy work van causing the van to rollover.
The driver of the work truck had a 2-year-old in the front seat. The child was unrestrained, FHP said. Two adults and the child were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
One of the trucks involved in the accident belonged to Gilda Industries -- the Hialeah-based cracker company.
The air rescue helicopter landed on the Palmetto Expressway near Northwest 67th Avenue in Hialeah.
