House Votes To Kill Pain Clinic Regulations

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) – A Florida House committee voted Thursday to eliminate all state regulations on pain clinics, repeal the drug database law, and stop doctors from dispensing drugs.

The vote by the Health and Human Services Committee sets up a showdown with a Senate committee which moved forward with plans for pain-management doctors.

The Senate plan would codify rules approved by the Florida Board of Medicine, while the House version would reject it.

According to the News Service of Florida, the former director of the Office of Drug Control, Bruce Grant, said the rules the House wants to eliminate include registration and inspection of pain clinics, but ban felons from owning the facilities.

“The problem is the pill mills are not legitimate medical practices,” Grant told the News Service of Florida. “They are criminal enterprises.”

The drug database, which was approved a few years ago by the state legislature, is in the crosshairs of Republicans in the House and Governor Rick Scott.

Wednesday, Scott declined financial help to pay for the operation of the database and stood by his decision to get rid of it. Scott cited privacy concerns as his problem with the database.

However, 34 other states have the databases and 9 others have approved it. Florida is the largest state in the United States without a drug database. It’s also the number one consumer of pain medicine of any state.

I must be missing something here. We don’t want to control class A narcotics and keep them from getting out of control. Are you kidding? When did the Pill Mill become a legitimate protected industry? I think we need a recall here…Gov Scott please take a fast train out of Florida. Wake up Florida, we’ve elected a nut case.

michael, i am in total agreement with you. last summer, i was called to the emergency room. my son had overdosed on pills, and i was told by the doctor that the outlook was very grim for him to survive. my life shattered before my eyes, as i watched the medical team tirelessly attempt to save his life. he spent 5 days in critical care. my son is one of the few lucky ones…he was able to leave the hospital and begin to heal. our governor is an atrocity, and i will happily get on the bandwagon to assist in removing him from office. perhaps before he leaves, though, he should spend some time in an emergency room or detox facility, where he can observe first hand, the tortured young people that are becoming addicted to these pills every day. i also work in the field of substance abuse. this problem as epidemic in south florida, and to allow it to continue is nothing short of insanity.

Rick Scott is a very smart guy. He wants to abolish all the databases becasue he owns and runs half of the pill mills in Florida. By destroying the databases, nobody will be able to find out that Rick Scott is the owner. That is why he is making money and not the poor people. We the poor people should not even elect anyone rich to run for office because we get stepped all the time.
