Fla. Cabinet Approves New Keys Water Rules

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) -- The Florida Cabinet on Wednesday approved rule changes to assist Florida Keys officials in updating storm and wastewater systems.

Monroe County was designated an area of critical concern in 1979 and has been under strict development requirements ever since.

State lawmakers in 2010 approved a slate of changes to remove the county from that designation if specific criteria is met.

Local officials and environmental groups urged the cabinet to approve the rule changes, which they say will allow local governments to take steps toward improving water infrastructure with the anticipation that state funds will be available to assist in that effort.
