TALLHASSEE (CBS4) -- Democrat Oscar Braynon of Miami Gardens is the newest member of the Florida Senate.

According to The News Service of Florida, the Elections Canvassing Commission officially certified his victory in a special election to replace former Sen. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, who was elected to Congress.

Braynon, who had been in a House seat, defeated Republican Joe Celestin earlier this month in a special election. Democrat Barbara Watson was elected to fill Braynon's seat.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, announced Monday morning that Braynon will serve on the Regulated Industries; Communications, Energy and Public Utilities; Judiciary; and Reapportionment Committees, and on the Rules, Higher Education Appropriations, and General Government Appropriations Committees.
