Owner Of Gun In Deadly Hollywood Shooting Given Probation

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A Hollywood woman whose gun was used in a fatal shooting of a teen in her home apologized to the boy's family before she was sentenced to four years of probation.

The judge also ordered Shari Edwards, who had been charged with culpable negligence, to perform 100 hours of community service and surrender her gun. She faced up to five years in prison if she had been convicted during a trial.

Edwards listened to a statement read by Daniel's mother, Dorris Rivera, and didn't react.

"My heart is torn apart. My children want their brother back," Rivera said. "What really hurts the most is that not once have you shown grief or sorrow for me and my family."

The deadly shooting occurred last April when Edwards' son, Jeff Dilworth, 14, and his friend 13-year old Daniel Torres were hanging out in the Edwards' home. Dilworth said he showed Torres his mother's nine millimeter handgun and put it away.

The teen told police he was playing a video game a short time later when he saw Torres pick up the gun and unload the bullets. Dilworth claimed he asked Torres for the gun but Torres squeezed the trigger, believing it was empty.

The gun fired, a bullet striking Torres in the forehead.

Dilworth said Torres didn't think the nine millimeter handgun was loaded and the shooting was an accident. The teen, who was charged with manslaughter, pleaded no contest last July and was sentence to nine months in a juvenile facility. On completion of his term, he will be on supervised release until her turns 21 years old. Dilworth could have faced up to 30 years in prison if he had been convicted during a trial.
