Man Hurt In Police Involved Shooting At Hollywood Church

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) - Hollywood Police said one of their officers was forced to shoot a knife wielding man inside a church Wednesday just before noon Wednesday.

Investigators said they received a 911 call informing them the man was trying to stab someone inside Luther Memorial Lutheran Church at 1925 North State Road 7.

"Upon arrival, an officer encountered a subject inside the bible classroom still armed with a knife," said Lt. Norris Redding, of Hollywood Police Department. "Fearing for the officers safety and others involved, the officer had to discharge his weapon at which time the subject was struck and transported to Hollywood Memorial Regional."

Hours later, police said they were questioning the man at the hospital, but did not identify him. Hollywood Police did tell CBS4 News that he is about 27-years-old and was shot in the torso area.

Investigators also would not say how many people were in the bible classroom when the incident occurred.

Congregation members leaving the church refused to say anything about the case. A woman who answered the phone for the church said they are sworn to secrecy.

This is the second police involved shooting in Hollywood in the last two weeks.
