One Dead, One Injured In Cooper City Head-On Crash

COOPER CITY (CBS4) - A Monday morning head-on collision in Cooper City has killed one woman and hospitalized another.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said just after 5 a.m. Jennifer Varnell, 20, of Weston was the driver of a Ford Escape that was heading the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Flamingo Road when she slammed head-on into a Mercedes driven by Martine Boisrond-Canal, 37 of Davie between Griffin and Stirling Roads.

Varnell has died of her injuries, according to BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.

Due to her life threatening injuries Varnell was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she died according to the sheriff's office. Boisrond-Canal, whose injuries were less serious, was also taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Sheriff's investigators are continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to the crash. They are awaiting toxicology results from the Broward Medical Examiner's Office to determine if impairment was a contributing factor in the collision. They said Boisrond-Canal was not impaired.
