One Dead, One Injured In Cooper City Head-On Crash

COOPER CITY (CBS4) – A Monday morning head-on collision in Cooper City has killed one woman and hospitalized another.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said just after 5 a.m. Jennifer Varnell, 20, of Weston was the driver of a Ford Escape that was heading the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Flamingo Road when she slammed head-on into a Mercedes driven by Martine Boisrond-Canal, 37 of Davie between Griffin and Stirling Roads.

Varnell has died of her injuries, according to BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.

Due to her life threatening injuries Varnell was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where she died according to the sheriff’s office. Boisrond-Canal, whose injuries were less serious, was also taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Sheriff’s investigators are continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to the crash. They are awaiting toxicology results from the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if impairment was a contributing factor in the collision. They said Boisrond-Canal was not impaired.

20 yr old, at 5:30am in the morning, tragic yes, but alcohol was probably a factor
you can preach all you want about don’t drink and drive but it will do no good
all drinkers think the can drive after frinking, thats what alcohol does to the brain
it alters you thinking and if your already brain dead before you start drinking yu havn’t got a snow balls chance in H of making anywhere safwe.

Depends upon where you are, some of the engineering designs of the roads can be quite confusing if you’re not familiar with the area. Signage might be weak or non-existent because of disrepair or whatever other issues. Miami Gardens & I-95 is one such area that some drivers could very easily wind up driving North on Southbound I-95 if they aren’t careful or familiar.

Sadly, she has on her FB page, “This night is gonna to end when we’re damn well ready for it to be over. Worked all week long now the music is playing on our time.” Those of you in your late teens and early twentys reading this: Please take a moment and consider what your mantra is in life. If it revolves around the night life and parties, chances are nothing fruitful will ever come of it… Ever.

    • Alice

Good job.. you cut someone down for a mantra they believed in. Too bad you quoted the “about me” section, which doesn’t have a time stamp, cause for all you know she wrote that when she was 16. You should take your truths that ever day all day partying seldom leads to anything successful and be productive with that, instead of hiding behind the letter “J” and making the accident that much more painful to everyone affected.

  • Justsaying

I guess we can figure your assumption is true if it means you’re an idiot.

i am terribly sorry that anyone had to lose their lives in this …but watch her family try to sue the person she crashed into…

    • Angel

You don’t know her family. They aren’t suing the person she hit. She was a beautiful girl from a wonderful family. Don’t judge people. You don’t know the facts, so keep your mouth closed. People like you we don’t need causing trouble in other peoples life. This is what just an ACCIDENT. A horrible accident.

      • CvG

Sounds like she was drunk to me.

  • D

I knew Jennifer and was best friends with her a few years ago for a long time…I feel bad for not talking to her recently. R.I.P.

  • Gabriel

Really? What a sorry comment. Shows your low self steem. God will forgive your ignorance

  • BGdaddy

So many of you small minded people I wonder if you say the same if she was your daughter or family member
PS I know the family and what ever the out come is they lost there daughter at 20 years old

  • K

For those compelled to post a comment, please remember a 20 YEAR OLD DIED!!!
This person was a daughter, sister and a friend. All cruel unsolicited comments are unwelcome and should be kept to your self. Although everyone has a right to their opinion, this DOES NOT imply your words should be made public!

  • Ash Turner

You know what, You guys are so rude. You write these mean comments hiding behind a computer and you don’t even consider that her friends are reading them. You don’t consider that we are so devastated that we can’t even function and some of us can’t even stop the tears from falling. Really though? Who are you to write mean things about someone? You should really watch out saying things because you never know when the tables might be turned, and god forbid, something like this happen to you.

I know Martine personnaly. We almost lost her… i thank the lord for saving her. And at the same time my prayers are with the familly that just lost some dear to them.
Apparently the girl who died was in the wrong still i don’t think that she deserves her faith.
Honestly we can avoid those unfortunate accidents. if you’re impaired or too tired, please don’t drive your vehicule .

    • Alice

Thank you for your supportive comment. I’m glad that some people still have kindness in their hearts.

I was one of Jennifer’s teachers for a few years in high school. I was truly saddened to find out about her passing in this horrific accident. Her smile and wit will be missed by those who knew her. May she RIP and may her family be comforted in this difficult time. She was way too young.

  • Christine

God, Please watch over Jennifer’s family at this horrible time. Please show them some comfort and hold them in your arms. We know you took another Angel home when you took Jennifer yesterday. Gold bless her and may she rest in peace. May Martine have a speedy recovery. Gold bless her and her family.
