DEERFILED BEACH (CBS4) – The two little girls struck by a car while crossing Powerline Road in Deerfield Beach Friday have been identified.
Megan Rocks, 13, of Coconut Creek and Emily Victor, 12 were both pediatric trauma patients at Broward General Medical Center. The girls remain in critical but stable condition in the pediatric intensive care unit Saturday night, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Mike Jachles.
It happened Friday night when Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy Marcella Dykie was flagged down while on patrol in the 200 block of South Powerline Road.
According to witnesses the two girls were crossing Powerline Road from east to west around 9:45 p.m. When they got to the center southbound lane, one approaching motorist honked its horn and avoided hitting the pair. The girls kept walking into the outside lane when they were struck by a southbound Ford Escort driven by 20-year-old Alfredo Salas of North Miami.
The girls were not in a designated crosswalk.
A Good Samaritan stopped to help the girls while Dykie arrived on the scene.
Deerfield Beach Fire-Rescue transported one of the girls and BSO Air Rescue airlifted the more critical girl, both to Broward General Medical Center.
Powerline Road remained closed into Saturday morning as police investigated the incident.
So far, BSO does not suspect alcohol or drug impairment were factors in the crash.
Detectives do not believe the Ford Escort was speeding. No charges were filed against the driver.
