Celebrate Kakes 4 Kids

Foster children rarely know the joy of a lavish birthday celebration. Oftentimes, their birthdays pass with little fanfare or notice.

Two South Florida women are working to change that and they need your help to expand their efforts.

Miriam Masihy and Keyla Concepcion created an organization called Kakes 4 Kids. They use their talents to bake elaborate cakes designed to each foster child's wishes. They spread out food and surprise the kids with a gift and entertainment like bounce houses, petting zoo and magicians at Children's Harbor in Pembroke Pines.

"We do this to let every child know their birthday is special and their lives and dreams are important and worth rejoicing," Masihy said.

Kakes 4 Kids is celebrating its' first anniversary with a fundraiser on March 5 at Signature Grand in Fort Lauderdale. The fundraiser costs $50 and includes a night of dinner and dancing.

Kakes 4 Kids celebrates the birthdays of 25-30 kids at Children's Harbor each year. They hope to begin the same efforts at His House in Miami-Dade, which serves about 90 children. They hope to begin parties at His House this summer.

"It is quite ambitious but we feel we can do this with the help of volunteers and supporters who have shown interest in touching the lives of these deserving kids," Masihy said.

The cakes the women make are a sight to behold. They spend hours designing a cake that will surpass the expectations of the birthday child. The cakes look too good to eat.

In November, I attended one of their parties and reported the story on CBS 4. The children's eyes lit up when they saw the Kakes 4 Kids gang. Many experienced a petting zoo and pony rides for the first time. As one of the house mothers told me, the parties bring the kids together with a shared experience and also enhanced their social skills and self-confidence.
