BSO Deputies Honored For Life-Saving Actions

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) - Two Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies were honored by the Oakland Park City Commission Wednesday night for risking their lives to save an elderly man from his burning home.

The rescue occurred on January 22, when Deputy Pete Storey and Deputy Neil Dodge rushed into the fully engulfed home of Richard Hellicas, 80, at 4311 NE 17 Avenue.

Once inside, they found Hellicas in the master bedroom, overcome by smoke.

The deputies carried Hellicas out of the home, where Oakland Park Fire Rescue crews were waiting.

Through CPR, Hellicas was able to regain consciousness and was transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where he made a full recovery,

"I'm grateful," said Hellicas, who attended the meeting. "I consider myself very lucky."

Deputies Storey and Dodge both received Life Safety Commendations from the Commission.
