NORTH MIAMI – (CBS4) – People inside a North Miami Starbucks got quite a scare Tuesday afternoon when an elderly driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake sending his black Lexus completely inside the coffee shop.

The impact injured four people inside who were taken to Aventura Hospital, said North Miami Police Maj. Neal Cuevas. A fifth person was injured in the crash, but did not need to be hospitalized, Cuevas added.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. at the Starbucks on 13503 Biscayne Blvd. The driver, whose name was not immediately released, may be charged with careless driving, Cuevas said.

Employees at the Jamba Juice next door described the impact as an “earthquake.”

“It’s kind of strange,” said Carmen Serrano, the general manager at the neighboring juice bar told CBSMiami.com. “The employees inside my store – they thought it was an earthquake.”

99.9% of the time when this happens its an elderly driver!!!! When is the state gonna mandate mandatory driving test after you reach a certain age??? When someone gets killed by an elderly drive while eating their egg mcmuffin???

I’ve had numerous friends have their cars damaged because of elderly drivers- such as one running a stop sign at 40mph and another older woman doing 80 on a residential street t-boning my friends car (cops say she didnt hit the brakes)

I know there are some elderly people who are quite capable of driving- but maybe instead of simply renewing their license, people should be required to retake he test every 10-15 yrs. You can’t always blame teenagers.
