Traffic Delays Expected For ING Miami Marathon

MIAMI (CBS4)- South Florida runners are lacing up for Sunday's ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon, but commuters will have to stay put.

That's because the event will shutdown parts of downtown Miami, Coconut Grove and Miami Beach, and some delays are expected as early as Saturday.

On Saturday, vehicular traffic will be redirected on Biscayne Boulevard. However, all vehicles will be able to get to all businesses and residences in the affected areas.

Starting at 12:00 a.m. Saturday, northbound commuters were not allowed along Biscayne Blvd. All traffic on Brickell Avenue traveling north towards the Brickell Bridge was and will continue to be directed west on 7th Street. Miami police officers will be on hand to help direct traffic.

Commuters are advised to carefully plan their routes, especially during the morning hours when the event is in full swing on Sunday as a number of roads will be closed, including some high-traffic arteries.

The race course begins at 6:15 a.m. at AmericanAirlines Arena, heads north and continues through Miami Beach, Downtown Miami, Little Havana, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables before returning downtown for a finish at Bayfront Park.

Approximately 20,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the eighth annual event. Friends, family and curious spectators mayline up along the 26.2 miles of roadways designated for the marathon to cheer on runners.

Some of the largest roads that will be closed include the following:

  • Biscayne Boulevard
  • McArthur Causeway
  • Venetian Causeway
  • Alton Road
  • Ocean Drive
  • Washington Avenue
  • Meredian Avenue
  • Virginia Street
  • Grand Avenue
  • Commodore Plaza
  • Main Highway
  • South Bayshore Drive
  • Brickell Avenue
