2 Miami-Dade Cops Killed Serving Murder Warrant

MIAMI (CBS4) – Four Miami-Dade police officers went to serve a murder warrant on a Miami man Thursday morning, but what could have been a routine task turned violent and deadly, leaving two officers and the suspect dead.

Officer Roger Castillo, a 21 year veteran, died at the man’s home after the suspect opened fire on the officers, who had come as part of a multi-agency task force to serve a City of Miami murder warrant. Officer Amanda Haworth, with 23 years on the force, died hours later at the hospital, after she was hit by gunfire. Suspect Johnny Simms, a young man with a long rap sheet, died at his home, killed by 30 year veteran officer Oscar Placensia, who opened fire when the suspect started shooting.

The violence destroyed two families and left South Florida’s law enforcement community aching with the loss of two fellow officers.

“Our worst nightmare was visited upon us again today,” said James Loftus, Miami-Dade Police Director, as he worked visibly to hold back emotion.

“They were murdered, and they were murdered by someone who had murdered someone else, and they were seeking that person out to take them into custody. Someone who was a career criminal.”

Simms, who was just 23 years old, already had a rap sheet that was 5 pages long. Loftus referred to him as a documented career criminal.

The team of officers, all of whom had special training and long experience in serving warrants, came to the house in the area of 69th Street and NW 6th Court in Miami around 11 a.m. to serve the murder warrant on Sims

A witness in the neighborhood told CBS4’s Gary Nelson that they heard a single shot, and then a volley of shots. When the shooting stopped, Officer Castillo and the Sims were dead. Officer Hayworth was mortally wounded, and was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Two hours after the shooting, police confirmed her wound had simply been too severe.

“It is my sad news to report that she has since expired in the operating room, ” Det. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz told reporters gathered outside Jackson Memorial Hospital, shortly after 1 p.m.

Miami-Dade director Loftus said he would make no effort to hide his anger at the deaths.

“Two angels from our police department were murdered today, and I’m angry about it,” Loftus said. “We have families who have been devastated. We have 4 children who have lost their parents…because they were doing their jobs, that simply.”

“Today, our community lost two more heroes. Our hearts ache for their families and their loved ones who are dealing with incomprehensible grief, loss and shock. These two officers were loving family members, friends and our neighbors.  They wanted to serve their community and make it a better, safer place for all of us,” said John Rivera, President of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.

Loftus said there were several people in the house where the shooting took place, including a number of people who police were interviewing as witnesses. Video from the scene showed children’s toys on the patio, just inches from where officer officer Castillo fell.

More than 100 police officers from numerous departments, including the US Marshal’s office which managed the task force, rushed to the shooting scene. Two schools in the area were briefly locked down, and I-95 was closed briefly as officers tried to figure out exactly what had happened.

But Marshals service spokesman Barry Golden confirmed officers were looking for no additional suspects, convinced Sims was the only person involved.

The bodies of Castillo and Sims remained at the house for hours while police investigated. By late afternoon, Castillo’s body was removed, as a cordon of silent officers watched the body go past.

“We’re torn apart by this,” Loftus said.”It makes me sick, physically, physically sick, nauseated, to try to sit there and talk to an officer’s father who has been murdered.”

Barry Golden, spokesperson for the US Marshals Service, said the officers were serving a Miami-Dade warrant as part of the task force.

“They had more than two officers here,” said Golden.  “I can’t give you numbers but they had plenty of officers here for safety. It’s very unfortunate.”

“Detectives that responded to this… are full time members of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force. We work in conjunction (with Miami-Dade Police Department).”

Two schools in the area of the incident were placed on lockdown shortly after the shooting.  Students at Jesse McCrarry/Little River Elementary School and Thena Crowder Elementary School were restricted to their classrooms.  Those lockdowns were lifted shortly after 12 p.m.

The area where the officers were serving the  warrant is known for a high level of violent crime.

“This is a very volatile area,” Golden said. “There are a lot of shootings in this area. Now you realize how dangerous this job can be. Tracking down fugitives, subjects who know they’re wanted, who are always armed. There are a lot of shootings and guns in this area and so you see how dangerous it is. Not only innocent people getting hurt but law enforcement officers who are equipped and prepared for that.”

Michael Williams is a dufus. Tried to get USMS Sr.Inspector Golden to say the USMS is outgunned. Great news reporting. Spread your dumb anti-gun nonsense elsewhere (like the gun buy back lies story) , not when there are dead and wounded

    1. Pacco Alvarez says:

Right on Kowman, that Michael Williams is a self-absorbed jackbackside. Only Defede speaks the truth on Channel 4.

    2. Mike alberti says:

I am sick and tired of the violence in Miami when is it going to stop? Take the guns off the street once and for all.

      1. INFIDEL_USA says:

And you honestly believe that will make things safe? You’re an idiot.

    3. Just sayin' says:

OK what was suppose to be accomplished by the rambling press conference that interrupted Oprah? The cops are dead its sad but I was in the middle of a show. Recap at 5, 6, or 11 because we all know that this story will be talked about for the next month and on every anniversary for the next 100 years. The same for the Arizona shooting. OK. People get shot and killed everyday. Just think of it as population control. BTW when will this episode be rebroadcast?

      1. patricia says:

Population control?! Two officers protecting US have been shot and killed and you call it population control!!

      2. GJ says:

You have to be the biggest piece of poop that ever walked the Earth. I hope this happens to you or your mama.

      3. Chrissy Kapcoe says:

You are a sick sick individual. I pray you NEVER have children and spread your spawn on this Earth. You are probably a criminal yourself if you have a lack of respect for human life. I hope you have to meet the officers’ children and ask them when Oprah will replay…Oprah herself is a waste of an hour. Volunteer at a school or a soup kitchen and give something back to the world.

  2. vincent says:

the bad guy was laying-in-wait….the officers were ambushed…..SRT in full tactical gear should have served the warrent….

    1. Mark says:

They try to have stop the violence rallies in those communities but they never get any big time support. This stuff happens everyday but it gets no attention, no one cares about those victims because their not law enforcement. Thats rediculous.

      1. THIS STUFF HAPPENS EVERY DAY says:

THIS STUFF HAPPENS EVERYDAY. NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE.

  3. Sassy says:

Wow, this is soo sad ! I pray for the families of those officers.

    1. sassy says:

I wonder how Commisioner Dunn is feeling right! You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. Who wins?

  4. Mike alberti says:

Those police officers where here to protect us now look what’s happened let’s respect the people who protect us!

    1. Der says:

Respect seems like you never been pulled over, You are a __________

  5. INFIDEL_USA says:

The spin on this story should be interesting. This was a command-level error. Obviously, there wasn’t enough preparation. Political correctness has just met the wall. It’s time to let the police do their jobs without being second guessed by the politicians and media. Treat these dirt-bags like the scum they are. My prayers go out to the families of the victims and to the wounded officer.

  6. Wyatt Earp says:

Another tactical blunder by cops who have no business arresting violent fugitives. Miami-Dade, pay up./

    1. Keep The Peace says:

Agreed… I will say that if the police department knew this guy was a violent offender, the should have had the TAC TEAM serving the warrant, and making the arrest. That was a very large mistake… I suppose they figured he was at his mothers house, so most likely would not respond in violence. Must be prepared and ready for anything.. FOREVER VIGILANT.! I think its time to send in the NATL Guard, to handle an out of control city. The People need to take the streets back from the thugs.

  7. BCS says:

Let’s reflect on the comment made by the woman on TV when Miami Police SWAT shot the last guy. “SO WHAT HE HAD A GUN IN HIS HAND”

Well, this is the “SO WHAT’! I can’t say on here what I even think of that “STUPID” comment!

Now we have 2 families that have lost loved ones……Thousands of cops who lost a BROTHER and a SISTER……….Countless others such as friends etc. that have to understand “WHY?” and there is NO ANSWER that is going to help the hurt, none that will ease the pain.

To the families of the officers who lost their lives IN THE LINE OF DUTY.
God Bless You and may he be with you in this most horrible times in your lives.
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

To all the cops who lost a BROTHER and SISTER today. God Bless You, and may he be with all of you in your times of sorrow. May Gods angels wrap their wings around each one of you to keep you safe. Stay safe.
Thank you for your unselfishness in protecting all of us each and every day.

To the offenders………..you are not worth the time or my thoughts

  8. MS.PAM says:

I DON’T LIVE IN MIAMI BUT WHAT HAPPEND TODAY WAS HEART BREAKING.SOMEONE’S FATHER OR MOTHER WON’T BE GOING HOME TONIGHT!

  9. juan says:

it is not the guns that are the problem , it is the people, this is what gov’t has created, no god anywhere, people are growing up believing in nothing and like savages

    1. Lots of guns says:

the gun is a tool like the car you drive it can be used for good or bad … if some one drive a car through the mall running over people are we going to ban the cars? it all comes down to people not the tool of choice.

      1. BB - Oakland Park says:

I agree with this comment 100%. It is not the gun, it is the person that chooses to own and use the gun.

It really doesn’t matter what law enforcement does to try and get guns off the streets. They will always be there and available to those you shouldn’t have them.

My sympathies and prayers are for all of those who have been affected by this trajedy.

      2. Mike alberti says:

Get rid of the guns and most of the killings will go away. Guns are evil

  10. Marcus says:

The tones of some of this officers email say they want to kill.

  11. joseph burkhart says:

god have mercy on the officers, family, and friends.

  12. chris3760 says:

truly heroes! gone but never 4gotten

  13. America Says says:

Keep them in jail the 1st time you catch them & this won’t happen.
Don’t let the lawers/liars keep ruining out country.

  14. aboot says:

i agree with vincent;can anyone answer why srt wasnt there;they had a special on tv about them the other day on doing drug warrants;well what about 1st dgree muder warrants;only 4 officers for that??????

  15. manny says:

today is tragedy that two policeofficers lost there lives today.my heart goes out to the families of the fallen officers.

  16. Jose says:

Here we have two more POLICE officer murder by someone that the system let free. But more important is the fact that we have our own STATE OFFICIAL recommending that individuals be allowed to carry weapons on them, because it may reduce crimes. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I feel sorry for the family of those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. As a veteran, I know what that is.

  17. stevie says:

    truly heroes, rip.

  18. America Says says:

5 page rap sheet & only 23 years old because the Lawers/Liars put them back in your neighborhoods & schools with your kids instead of prison.

    1. Clay Renoit says:

They could live right behind you. So what…in some of these comments it startes by a hate. Why? The kids did nothing, the families did nothing. So why steer hate into kids and people…Its everywhere here….hate…I come from New Orleans and prayed for something to clean-up all the hater’s and it did. Funny thing I pray everynight for the same storm to clean all the hate here in Miami. It will it did in New Orleans it can happen here too….So keep hating. God said you can’t love him if you have hate. Kids get killed here everynight. This is got to stop. The storm is coming…..be ready…..”whats prison a playground” hard earned tax dollars. No a life for a life. KNOW THATS WORTH THINKING ABOUT. kill them as they come in prison….the buck stops ! ! ! and the tax dollar does too. NOW THIS WOULD MAKE PEOPLE STOP AND THINK BEFORE KILLING..

      1. Keep The Peace says:

I completely agree with you… i think stiffer consequences is the answer.. if these street thugs realized that they would be killed for violent heinous crimes, they would indeed think before killing.. in the end PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO DIE.
giving them “3 hots and a cot” and free cable, that is more like a trip to a resort for some of these offenders. A bullet to the head, is humane and inexpensive.

  19. jackman says:

next time you are stopped by a police officer you should know you have been stopped by a millionaire. they have forced the cities across the country to pay them average $125,000 per year salary plus all the perks of insurance and expenses while they roam free violating traffic rules. then they just retire at age 42 and draw full salary as pension.
in todays’ low interest rates you would have to have $10million in bank to earn $125,000 per year.

    1. Money says:

Your ignorant!!! You sound likens wimp and wouldnt do that job for a $1 million dollars. Ask yourself . What is it worth to allow your kids to grow up without a mother or father?

    2. BCS11 says:

well then dearest jackman, you go do the job. If you like their pay and pension, go apply. PLEASE DO!
Think about this, before on opens their mouths.
How many times have you been called into work for a hurricane, and had to leave your wife/husband and CHILDREN at home alone?
How many times have you been called into work for the riots that are going on, in a community? Again leaving your family at home alone?
OH YEAH DID I SAY, tell them you don’t know when you will be home?
      OH THEN THE ULTIMATE………….
HOW MANY TIME HAVE YOU LEFT HOME, AND WONDERED IF YOU WERE COMING HOME? I will answer that for you………….. NEVER!

You, my dear, are very misinformed………..Don’t open your mouth …..
UNTIL YOU HAVE WALKED IN THEIR SHOES!

Please do all of us a favor, attend the funerals of these officers…….
you don’t have the nerve to!

ASK YOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS TO SEE THEIR PAY AND PENSIONS!

  20. Kelly says:

Johnny Simms is the only hero in todays attack. Thanks for taking a stand. Rip

    1. Money says:

You gotta be on ignorant person to make such a comment!!! Get a life !!! Why dint you give your full name and address and stop hiding behind that alais !!! Get a life and a heart . Both of those vows where doing the jobs . There where doing something honest and honorable. Rot in hell KELLY!!!

    2. Keep The Peace says:

what is wrong with you… ?? He is a criminal and not a Martyr.
he was on the streets shooting and killing other people, in then end … for money.
That Kelly is not taking a stand.. its being a coward and not being able to face consequences for your own actions. That is not a hero.. its a coward.

  21. Dave Brown says:

If we allow the Dems more control there will be no guns,no sugar, no smokes no booze no candy no cake no meat etc etc!!!! If we are to blame anyone it’s the Government for allowing people like him to have a record a mile long and still be on the street!!!!

  22. Dave Brown says:

and you some of you want the Government to run HEALTHCARE……..ARE YOU NUTS

  23. Wyatt Earp says:

MDPD DIrector and the Commander are a disgrace. Crying on camera and saying stupid silly things which embarrass LEOs and the community accomplishes nothing. The chain of command that allowed this incident should be run out of town. The BSO non-SWAT incident to arrest a kiddie porn guy was forgotten rather quickly, eh? Suit up Alvarez your soon to be out of office. Maybe SRT could use you for the shield on its entries.

  24. penco says:

We can’t, because tree huggers call it police abusive behavior.

  25. Clay Renoit says:

ALL THE FOLKS THE POLICE AND EVERYONE ELSE AND THE FAMILIES. ALL OF YOU. YOU HAVE A JOB THAT SOME CAN’T DO. I HAVE TO GIVE IT TO YOU. TELL THEM ALL THAT THERE DOING A GREAT JOB..GIVE THEM A GIFT CARD FROM WALMART,KMART MAKE IT WORTH THERE TIME… THEY WORK HARD TO DO WHAT THEY DO..AND THERE FAMILIES WORK HARD TOO. IF I HAD TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF I WOULD STOP BEING A POLICE OFFICER.

  26. sad says:

I’m waiting for the family and friends of the suspect to come out with the following statement, ” He wuz a good boy (5 pg rap sheet) heed never hurt anybody; heed wuz juzt scared cuz doez white people were gonna hurt him.

I hope everyone who was staying or visited that house will be arrested for murder; especially the one person who answered the door.

God Bless the fallen officer’s families, friends and everyone who’s lives they touched by delivering justice; may they be in peace.

  27. Bahamian police officer says:

My prayers go out to the family of the fallen heros ! I am not am American but I am a police officer in the Bahamas so I know the pain of such a loss so well. I to almost lost my life in the line of duty but I was fortunate and I am still here. I will continue to lift you up in prayers that you be shielded as you continue to protect and serve your communities ! From your brothers and sisters in law enforcement in the Bahamas ! God Bless !

  28. Clay Renoit says:

“SOMEONES MATH IS WRONG” These Police do not make a million dollars. But if they did it would be worth it…Look at what they do in a everyday job. Putting up with my dirt and yours…..If they make a million dollars thats great….they should for all the crap they do…..BUT AGAIN I THINK SOMEONES MATH IS OFF. ( WHO CARES WHAT THEY MAKE YOUR NOT DEALING WITH PEOPLE THATS MADE A TRASHY COMMENTS ABOUT THESE THAT DIED) WHATS BAD IS MOST OF YOU THAT HAVE UGLY COMMENTS TO MAKE. NEVER CALLED FOR HELP BEFORE…OR NEEDED 911 AND THE POLICE NEVER CAME. IF THIS IS THE CASE I COULD SEE WHY ALL THE HATE!!!! ( LOOK THEY ALWAYS COME IF YOU CALL) I HAVE NEVER CALLED THE POLICE AND A PLUMBER SHOWS UP… WHY HATE ? SOMEONE IN MIAMI AT CHURCH HATES SOMEONE..WHY??? people stop all the hate and start getting along. go help a friend out. go help a person thats homeless….Bad thing people here will not help someone in need.. you have to give to get….thats the way it works.

    1. Money says:

Thank you sir !! God bless !!

  29. I'm not that crazy says:

Most of us agree this is a tragic event, but as someone who has driven a emergency vehicle for 20+ years I would like to comment on the circus I, and several of my friends witnessed this morning between 0800 and 0900 on various highways in and around Miami Dade County. I know there are specific guidelines on when a law enforcement officer is authorized to use emergency lights and siren. Reporting to a funeral that had been scheduled more than 24 hours prior is not or should not be one of those times. I wish the News 4 Helicopter had been covering State Road 836 at 0830 this morning and seen the officers from Hialeah, Miccosukee, and Miami Dade I witnessed weaving through rush hour traffic at a high rate of speed with lights and in some cases siren in order to hurry up and wait for the procession to start two hours late for the fallen officers.

I am sure some policies will be reviewed in the wake of these shootings. I hope they also review the way officers conduct themselves behind the wheel. I applaud FHP for restricting cell phone use while driving.

  30. Keep The Peace says:

Sounds to me like they need to have some intervention down there.
Taking guns away from law abiding citizens is NOT the answer. The criminals will always have access to guns, so that is a waste to talk about gun control.
It appears with the attitudes and what is truly going on, that they need to have some intervention by the NATIONAL GUARD. I would consider this ongoing epidemic HOMELAND TERRORISM. Time to put these criminals behind bars, or better yet.. if you are a habitual violent offender… we should just rid the world of you all together. The answer my friends, is stiffer punishments for the offenders, including losing your own life, if you cant behave.

  31. *Shrugs* says:

I feel bad bout the families tht lost loved ones, but it seems the ONLY time these officers hve something to say is whn they’ve lost an officer. Police kill innocent ppl all the time and whn the media has questions on tht, the answer is always “we’re looking into the situation and investigating” . and its nvr breaking news! I dnt like officers at all! I see it as karma….unfortunately, innocent lives were taken but officers in general (dade / broward areas) are nasty ppl! Period! And I believe they look for reasons to shoot!

  32. anthony c watkins says:

i am so sorry about the two officers that passed i watched them on the first 48 all the time they were very good at their job
