Man's Legs Severed In Accident, Followed By Melee

MIAMI (CBS4) -- A Miami man was hospitalized over the weekend when his legs were severed after he was pinned between an SUV and a wrought-iron fence. The chain reaction was set off by a drunk driver, according to a police report.

Police arrested Alex Molina, 19, Saturday after they say he collided into a Ford Bronco and fled the scene. Molina was charged with DUI, DUI with property damage, DUI with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with damage and injuries. A bond court judge set his bond at $35,000.

Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll says seven more people were injured in a melee that broke out after the crash.

Authorities say the SUV driven by Molina was going the wrong way down a Miami street late Saturday struck a Ford Bronco. The Bronco then slammed into the man standing on the sidewalk at SW 4th Street and 19th Avenue.

Carroll says the Bronco pinned the man against the fence, severing both his legs.

"You can tell that speed is definitely a factor and riding down the wrong side of the street with a lot of people, including children and elderly," said Lt. Carroll.

The man's name was not released. Lt. Carroll says he was hospitalized in serious condition.

Meanwhile, Carroll says it's not clear what sparked the melee after the crash. Seven other people were brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital with injuries suffered in the brawl. Two people were arrested for obstructing paramedics on the scene.
