Golfer Shot On Back Nine Dies From Injuries

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) – On Thursday, Lataurus Randall and a buddy were doing what they often do in the afternoons -- squeeze in a round of golf at Deerfield Country Club.

As the pair made it to 17th hole, detectives with the Broward Sheriff's Office said a pair masked men jumped out of some nearby bushes and tried to rob them.

Randall was shot and killed during the attempted robbery.

Randall's stepfather, Ruben Moss, said the community lost a generous man who lived to help those in need.

"If there was something he could do for another person, he would gladly do it," Moss told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "A lot of people respected the fact that he was glad to do things for them and they appreciated it."

Randall leaves behind a loving family, including a 9-year-old son.

Friday afternoon, investigators went door to door in the neighborhood adjacent to the 17th hole where the thieves are believed to have run after the shooting. Detectives and deputies handed out flyers with Randall's picture on it, requesting information that might lead to the arrest of his killers.

Randall's family hopes someone comes forward with a clue that can crack the case.

Randall's golfing buddy spoke briefly with CBS 4's Carey Codd by phone Friday evening. He said he has no idea why the thieves targeted the two men. He also said he hopes detectives are able to track down the killers.

The manager of the golf course said they have never experienced a robbery on the golf course. Another worker said Randall and his golfing buddy were "regulars" on the course and enjoyed playing the game.

Near the 17th hole and just off the golf course property, CBS 4 cameras saw a large hole in the fence. Investigators are not sure if that is how the killers gained access to the course but they know they hid in some nearby bushes, waiting to strike.

Investigators are not saying what, if anything, the thieves stole from Randall and his friend.

Randall's family gathered Friday to mourn. They also listened to a detective provide information about the case. The family can only wait for new details to emerge about the mysterious men who took Randall's life.

Stepfather Ruben Moss said Randall did not deserve to die in such a violent way.

"He did live his life accordingly to the way he wanted others to treat him and it's just unfortunate and a tragedy that others didn't respect and treat him the same way that he treated others," Moss said.
