Verizon Finally Gets iPhone

NEW YORK (CBS4) - Verizon Wireless announced Tuesday that it will start selling a version of the Apple iPhone 4 in early February. The announcement finally gives U.S. iPhone buyers a choice of carriers for the first time.

The Verizon iPhone will have one main difference from the AT&T version. The Verizon iPhone will operate on the company's CDMA network, which means customers will not be able to surf the net and talk on the phone at the same time.

The AT&T iPhone runs on the GSM network which does allow customers to surf the net and use other data services while talking on the phone.

One new aspect the Verizon Wireless iPhone will bring with it is the ability to turn the iPhone into a Wi-Fi hotspot. This would allow a user to operate a laptop on the 3G network by connecting to the Wi-Fi network the Verizon iPhone set up.

The Verizon iPhone has been discussed and rumored for around 2 years, but is just now coming to fruition. Verizon said it's iPhone will sell for $199 or $299, depending on the size of the hard drive you need.

Sales of Verizon's iPhone will begin on February 10 and pre-orders for the iPhone will start on February 3.

And not one to let a little fun pass them by, Apple issued its press release at 11:11 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2011, or 1/11/11.
