MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) — What happens when an Italian family and a Jewish family find out their sons are gay? All there is to say is, ‘Oy vey!’

That’s the premise behind the new comedy “Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!,” a romantic and heartwarming comedy about a mainstream Jewish family living in the North Shore of Long Island who struggle with coming to terms with their son’s non-Jewish gay boyfriend.

At first, the family invites another “perfect” girl for Shabbat dinner in hopes that their son, Nelson, played by John Lloyd Young, will marry a nice Jewish girl.  After a number of attempts, Nelson reveals to his family that he’s gay.

CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo sat down with director, producer and writer Evgeny Afineevsky and actor Bruce Vilanch, who plays uncle Max, the Jewish boy’s gay uncle.

“The movie really is about two couples who discover that their sons are gay, getting married …and having a baby. It’s a trifecta!” said Vilanch.

Lainie Kazan plays the mother. The film also stars Carmen Electra and Saul Rubinek.

Afineevsky said the comedy and storyline is universal.

“We think this script can be easily translated into any story in any nation with any ethnicity– or color of skin”.  Afineevsky said. “It’s not about being gay. It’s about everybody in this world who needs understanding and acceptance”.

Afineevsky first met Vilanch, a comedy writer and actor, when he was playing “Edna Turnblad” in “Hairspray.”

“I play Lainie Kazan’s brother,” Vilanch said. “He saw me in “Hairspray” so I thought he wanted  me to play Lainie Kazan, but no.”

And keeping Vilanch’s signature look was important.

“I love the look,” Petrillo said, touching Vilanch’s hair.

“Well, when you’re a natural beauty…” joked Vilanch

With more than 22 awards at international film festivals–  this small budget film – could be the next “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”.

“Call it ‘My Big Fat Gay Wedding’– It’s that and ‘In and Out’ and ‘Meet The Parents’, that’s my movie,” Afineevsky said.

“When you say small budget, can you give me numbers?” Petrillo asked.

“You got any change?!” Bruce joked.

‘Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay’ is out in selected South Florida from South Beach to Delray Beach. Check your local listings for show times or click here.
