Out Of This World Tourism Deal

MIAMI (CBS4) — South Floridians who want to book an out-of-this-world vacation can now do so at three local travel agencies. The agencies, according to the Sun Sentinel, are among a small list of firms authorized to sell trips to space aboard Virgin Galactic, the world’s first space line.

Starting next year, Virgin Galactic plans to fly tourists to the edge of space, or about 60 miles above the Earth’s surface, where passengers experience weightlessness and see the curvature of the Earth.

The cost? $200,000 with deposits starting at $20,000.

The company says it has taken reservations and deposits from more than 400 people.

There are only 76 travel agencies nationwide authorized to sell Virgin Galactic space trips; 6 of them are in Florida and only 3 in South Florida. They are: Forest Travel of Aventura, Sixth Star Travel of Plantation and Unique Travel of Delray Beach.

Virgin Galactic, the travel company launched by Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines and music, recently flew their first space craft over the Mojave Desert in California to complete their flight in New Mexico, home to the company’s Spaceport America terminal.

Plans call for Virgin Galactic to offer three flights a day, five days a week. Each flight can carry six passengers and two pilots, according to a news release.

Here’s how the trips work: The aircraft will set off connected to a mother ship, which will rise 50,000 feet before detaching. The Enterprise’s rocket motors will ignite, accelerating the ship to three times the speed of sound, taking it up above the Earth’s atmosphere.

Engines will then shut off, leaving passengers weightless, where they can view the Earth from space.

After four or five minutes, gravity will begin to drag the Enterprise back down to earth. The entire trip is over in less than one hour, Forest Travel said in a news release.

The US cannot get into space anymore but private corporations can. How sad. No $ for NASA, limitless $ to support endless Wars for Israel, it all started nearly a decade ago under a false flag attack.
    9/11 and Israel, here:

kookoo kookoo , take your pills Hank

“wars for Israel” ??? Get a grip dude.

More power to this Virgin Galatic for attempting to get people into space since the Obama government seems to be encapable of doing it. However, 60 miles up is not space. Actual space above the Earth begins at approximately 120 miles up and in order to orbit, you need about this height above Earth. When Virgin Galatic can put people in orbit, then that will be real news for future.

    • dbw

Agreed, it may not be orbital space, but the threshold to get your astronaut pin is 50 miles (80km). With that said, if you ask any layman, they’ll probably tell you that if you can get an astronaut pin, you’ve been in space.

Walter 12, it’s not that Obama is incapable, it’s that the private sector can do it more efficiently without taxpayers money. Virgin is a good example. Seems some of you complain no matter what he does. Makes you wonder what the underlying problem is with your perception of reality.

And, at the end of the day, manned space needs to be able to support itself, if we are ever to develop a permanent presence out there. This is just the first step, and will support the development needed to start making things there.

Think of it as the way computer games are driving much of the computer development that’s driving the new AI revolution.

Wow,thats a lot cheaper than a presidential trip to Hawaii…even if you throw in the snow cones for free,,,…!!!

    • Peter

      ROFLMAO!!! That was good.

  • Rick

“Wars for Israel” only began a decade ago??? Wow…your history distortion field is near overload.

The problem with President Obama is that he does not see space exploration as a priority for his administration. More troubling is that among his administration’s priorities are redistributing wealth and genital washing in Africa. Seriously, for you to presume about someone’s perception of reality stinks of vitriol considering what the Obama administration’s perception of taxpayer money is. Consider that the next time you thumb your nose at American achievement. People who disagree with someone’s policies are NOT necessarily doing so out of racism. More likely because those policies are idiotic and destructive.
