Pines Teen Killed In Canal Crash

MIRAMAR (CBS4) - The Broward Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man who died early Friday morning after a car he was in crashed into a canal near Mack's Fish Camp in unincorporated Miramar.

Sheriff's detectives said 19-year old Kevin Cardoza of Pembroke Pines was killed in the crash; a second person in the car identified as 17-year old Michael Stone remains hospitalized.

Shortly after 4 a.m. deputies were called to the fish camp after someone called 911 to report that a 2007 silver, four-door Hyundai had veered from a dirt road and plunged into a canal off Krome Avenue and 186th Street.

It's unclear at this point whether Stone or Cardoza was driving. After the crash, the owner of the business and another good Samaritan jumped into the water and were able to pull Stone and Cardoza out of the submerged car.

Cardoza was airlifted to the hospital where he died. Stone was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with what were termed 'non-life threatening' injuries.

Detectives are investigating an earlier burglary at Mack's to determine if there is any relation to the crash.

The owner of Mack's Fish Camp, Keith Jones, said he awoke at 4 a.m. to see two men outside of the fish camp. The men asked for help because their other car was stuck in a canal down the road. As the men backed the silver Hyundai out of the business, they ended up in a nearby canal themselves.

"I walk outside and there's this car backing up fast, how fast I can't say, but it was fast," says Jones.

Jones jumped in to help pull one man out, but the other man was underwater for several minutes.

"I could see movement in the water. One kid spoke and said help, I'm drowning," said Jones. "I jumped in and dragged him to shore."

Jones later learned that the men had stolen a computer and were attempting to take money out of the cash register before Jones approached them.

"There was a second car in the ditch so that was true, but they were down here up to no good. They were here to ask for help and they helped themselves to whatever they could get," says Jones.

Police also later learned that the black Hyundai the men were traveling in was stolen.
