Police Search For Van Driver That Left Motorcyclist To Die

MIAMI (CBS4) – MIAMI (CBS4) – Gerardo “Gerry” Herrera was on his motorcycle Friday night making what was likely one of his last trips of the year.

A van driver guaranteed that when he apparently cut Herrera off, causing the 23-year-old to crash.

The unknown driver then pulled over and stared at the dying Herrera before driving off.

“He was a really good person. He tried really hard,” said Guedy Lara, Herrera’s wife.

The accident happened late Friday at US 1 and 336th Street in South Miami-Dade, according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

Det. Zabaleta said a white Chevy or Ford van was northbound and made a left turn in front of Herrera. That sent Herrera to the pavement, badly injured.

Witnesses called for help, but Herrera later died of his injuries.

“He (the driver) never exited his vehicle, never rendered aid, never called 911,” said Det. George Wilhelm of the Miami-Dade Police Traffic Homicide Unit.

Herrera leaves behind a wife and a 4-year-old son.

His wife, Lara, has a message for the driver who didn’t stop to help her husband.

“You know what, I’m not even angry, please just do the right thing. He had a family, he had a four year old son, who now doesn’t have a father,” she said.

Miami-Dade’s Traffic Homicide unit is looking for help from anyone who may have seen the accident, or who might have information about the driver. If you know anything, please call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

its a shame that you blame every immigrant for doing crimes last time i checked you where once one too .. theres all kinds of bad people in the world boo.

  • Danny

I think the guy should be punish regarless of race color or religion or migratory status Jose you are Cuban no doubt about it if yoy know it was an iligal immigrant then step forword and do the rigt thing

  • Mike

People do not care about people in Miami. I see it every day. How could you just leave someone to die, especially if it was your fault! That is not only not human, it is animalistic. I have been in three car accidents in South Dade. ALL 3 were non English speaking Cubans with no insurance or license who rear ended me. All 3 started yelling at the cops saying it was my fault. Sometimes I feel like I’m trapped in the Twilight Zone in some third world country.

What does this make it? Around 10 hit and runs in Dade for 2010? There was one in Broward about a month ago but those legume consuming punks were caught.

Instead of putting cameras on every traffic light in miami (just for the politicians to pcket more money for themselves) why don’t every city put cameras in every street corner and you will see how all these hit and runs will end.

Its a chame to say but people or lots of them don,t care about other people and I leave down south and we have lots of people from other countrys that dont have a drivers licenses cause i drive a tow truck and work for FHP and Metro dade and I see lots of them get stop and there car taken away for not having papers or driver licenses and it a chame that these goes on and people are loosing there lives cause of it .

  • mrkoe

This has to do with an individual’s character, or lack thereof, it has nothing to do with the quality of people of Miami.

    • Mike

Sorry, but I disagree. Spend some time in any other city in Florida or the US and you will notice the difference. Miami is a zoo.

      • Gill Man

Unfortunately, I agree with this. People here drive like lunatics with aggression to boot. I don’t know anywhere else in the developed world as bad.

  • Vinny

That makes about 200 hit and runs for 2010. You understand they don;t want to get deported. It was an accident but when you leave its a crime. They are just hard working people looking for a better life !!!! Sick of hearing it

  • z

i agree with el cubachon. they are so busy tring to catch red light runners instead of fighting crime. i understand that running a red light is a definete killer but put cameras in every street corner to fight all crimes.

  • Diana

why does it always have to be the immigrants that do the bad things last time i checked theres bad of every race if you have nothing to say shut it dude.! i hope they find the guy and do justice wether hes black white or purple…
