Unexplained Accident Kills Child, Injures Another

HOMESTEAD (CBS4) -- A young boy was killed in Homestead Saturday when the car he was riding in struck a concrete median and flipped.

The 7-year-old was one of seven people in a 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by Esther Baena-Ruiz, 33, who for unknown reasons drifted over the center median and into the opposing traffic at about 10 PM Saturday night.

Police say she was traveling westward on Campbell Drive when she hit the raised median. The impact flipped the car over, according to Det. Fernando Morales of the Homestead Police Department.

The unnamed male child is the only casualty so far, but a 6-year-old was airlifted to Ryder  Trauma Center with a lacerated liver, Morales said.

Baena-Ruiz is the mother of the child who was killed and the 6-year old. There is no other word on the condition of the four other people who were in the car.

Police are continuing to investigate the causes of the crash and will not say if alcohol is involved until toxicology reports return. No charges have yet been filed against Baena-Ruiz.
