HOMESTEAD (CBS4) — A young boy was killed in Homestead Saturday when the car he was riding in struck a concrete median and flipped.

The 7-year-old was one of seven people in a 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by Esther Baena-Ruiz, 33, who for unknown reasons drifted over the center median and into the opposing traffic at about 10 PM Saturday night.

Police say she was traveling westward on Campbell Drive when she hit the raised median. The impact flipped the car over, according to Det. Fernando Morales of the Homestead Police Department.

The unnamed male child is the only casualty so far, but a 6-year-old was airlifted to Ryder  Trauma Center with a lacerated liver, Morales said.

Baena-Ruiz is the mother of the child who was killed and the 6-year old. There is no other word on the condition of the four other people who were in the car.

Police are continuing to investigate the causes of the crash and will not say if alcohol is involved until toxicology reports return. No charges have yet been filed against Baena-Ruiz.

Just the typical type of driver in Homestead. There is absolutely NO traffic enforcement in Homestead at all, SO as a result the drivers are getting WORSE and WORSE ! ! ! I avoid some id-ot everyday. WHERE IS HOMESTEAD POLICE ! ! ! !

  2. tom says:

People like you are so retarded, why is it always the police fault? How could they have stopped someone from driving into the Median. She was probably on her cell phone or the kids distracted her,use your head you idiot.

  3. tom says:

10 to one she was on cell no cure for stupidy

  4. Roger DeVero says:

Previous poster is RIGHT ON! As a Florida taxpayer, who PAYS THE POLICE their wages and nice benefit plans, this lack of traffic enforcement occurs IN ALMOST ALL OF FLORIDA. I know of only TWO FL towns where the police enforce the driving laws. And IF the police would enforce the laws, lives would be saved, AND THE LOCAL CITY GOVERNMENTS WOULD MAKE A PROFIT BY DOING SO.
So how do you explain the stupidity? Simple; such idiocy is typical of Florida.

    1. observerfromupnorth says:

Mr. DeVero you nailed it. It is a known fact if each local would post officers at certain points they would be able to pay their entire cities payroll in one week, not just for the speeding but the honking of horns, unsafe distance, booming car, jay walking, stereos etc…. The $500 fine for littering alone would enable Florida to be a totally tax free state.

  5. Carlos says:

If only the Homestead PD or the FHP would sit on Campbell Dr or 137 Ave once or twice a day for an hour giving out speeding tickets it would make a world of difference.

  6. JolieRN says:

I have to agree with posts!! Homestead is a jungle!

  7. Robbie Underwood Mock says:

Welcome to the jungle. I am 5th generation native and can NOT wait to get out of here. We have to pay such high auto insurance only to be hit by someone that has no insurance, no lisence, no registration and a stolen tag!! Or hit the ones that run stop signs AND then they have the audacity to sue my insurance provider…….
