Winterfest Boat Parade Lights Up Intracoastal

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - It's the biggest boat parade in the world, and it happened Saturday night on the Intracoastal Waterway in Broward County.

The 39th annual Winterfest Boat Parade brought hundreds of boats, large and small, decorated for the season for a parade that dazzled the eyes and, at times, snarled traffic.

The parade started at 6:30 p.m.,  just as soon as it's fully dark, and will lasted about 4 hours, depending on where you were watching the free event.

The parade is unique because boats ranging from pleasure craft to giant yachts decorate for the holiday and float down the waterway for spectators. Some boat owners and sponsoring organizations work for weeks to prepare the boats, much like participants in the Macy's Parade or the Tournament of Roses parade.

The nighttime boat parade creates a fantasy view of the holiday unlike any other, and this year the theme was "Dancing thru the Decades," and celebrated the 100th birthday of Ft. Lauderdale.
