Miami Police Cracking Down On Drunk Drivers

WATSON ISLAND (CBS4) - Several South Florida law enforcement agencies want motorists to know: driving under the influence this holiday season, or any time, is against the law.

Miami Police officers participated in a multi agency DUI Sobriety Checkpoint Friday night on the 1000 block of MacArthur Causeway.

The checkpoint is part of a national initiative called the National Holiday Season Impaired Driving Enforcement Wave.

Authorities say December is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on roadways nationwide due to an increase in drunk driving.

In addition to the causeway checkpoint, officers will also be saturating the streets of Miami, keeping an eye out for anyone behind the wheel who may be impaired.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, in December of last year, 753 people in the U.S. were killed in crashes that involved one or more drivers driving under the influence.

This initiative is in conjunction with the Florida Sustained DUI Enforcement Program, 2010 Drunk Driving: Over the limit, Under Arrest, Let Eliminate Aggressive Driving and the 2010 Buckle Up Florida: Click It or Ticket Campaigns.
