WATSON ISLAND (CBS4) – Several South Florida law enforcement agencies want motorists to know: driving under the influence this holiday season, or any time, is against the law.

Miami Police officers participated in a multi agency DUI Sobriety Checkpoint Friday night on the 1000 block of MacArthur Causeway.

The checkpoint is part of a national initiative called the National Holiday Season Impaired Driving Enforcement Wave.

Authorities say December is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on roadways nationwide due to an increase in drunk driving.

In addition to the causeway checkpoint, officers will also be saturating the streets of Miami, keeping an eye out for anyone behind the wheel who may be impaired.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, in December of last year, 753 people in the U.S. were killed in crashes that involved one or more drivers driving under the influence.

This initiative is in conjunction with the Florida Sustained DUI Enforcement Program, 2010 Drunk Driving: Over the limit, Under Arrest, Let Eliminate Aggressive Driving and the 2010 Buckle Up Florida: Click It or Ticket Campaigns.

They’re just justifying their jobs or getting OT for holiday shopping.

How about a crack down on half the county here illegally with no drivers license. After that clean up, worry about the drunk drivers.

FHP does a great job all year long, we need to support them.Beach police are the ones getting the off duty work and turning their heads!

    2. Babs says:

A very necessary need all year, not just the Holidays. Also, they will get “the illegals” both citizens or not, who don’t have a drivers license. That being said, not thrilled the I sat on the causway for 1 hour tonight and I didn’t even get checked though, not a drop of alcohol in my blood

should do it every weekend on all lanes westbound of all the causeways from 11pm to 7am, if you want to stop the problem. By telling everyone about McArthur Causeway, drunks will take the 41dt street causeway!
Also valet parkers should not give cars to drunks at the clubs and hotels, stop the problem up front!

It’s all a scam for union OT. We’ve been through this before in Miami, a decade ago. Cops earning an extra 50k over a year for roadblocks. Studies show that the roadblocks are COMPLETELY ineffective. How quickly we forget. It’s such a good thing the city has so much extra money to pay for this. Glad to see that now that we have a Habana PD again and things are back to normal. This city government is a joke.

    you’re right on, man!

  6. K7 says:

They announce DUI check points because of stupid Civil Liberties. If not, it would have everyone protesting its fowl play, its an entrapment. Damn if you do, Damn if you don’t.

  7. kimosabe34 says:

This is a stupid article. We have to force the Cabs down here to take passengers where ever they need to go.. Cab drivers are especially at fault. They only look for the fare they want.Other than that leave the car at home and rent a room on the beach… It’s cheaper than a lawyer! To attempt to clear yourself. You always lose and the lawyer always wins!!

  8. o says:

Just took an hour to get off of South Beach and I didn’t see them pull one person over for the checkpoint. Completely and utterly unnecessary.

  9. Tony Montana says:

Anyone who opposes Civil Liberties needs to go back to Communist Cuba, China, Iran or whatever repressive regime they came from. MY civil rights are more important than some cop’s need for overtime money.

This is just an offshot of the Christian wackjobs and their stupid desire to force their Prohibition on everyone. Stop forcing your beliefs on everyone morons!

  10. Tony Montana says:

I’m just amazed how the excessive enforcement started when our oh so poor police officers had their salaries and pensions cut and now suddenly feel the need to justify their jobs. Amazing how they find budget money to stage this show…

  11. Tony Montana says:

..And Civil rights? How about Freedom fom Unreasonable search and seize…Piece of paper called the Constitution gives me that right..ditto for innocent til proven guilty. All I know is I already made my donation to the police charity: my hours are billed at around 90 – hour and change wasted waiting to pass thru. Add the eighth of a tank of gas burned..about 3 or 4 bucks. Therefore they got their money already. When they find who busted my car window instead of inconveniencing me with these checkpoints then they’ll get my respect.

  12. Tony Montana says:

Tonight apparently its South Miami and Gables making themselves rich..South Miami setting up a perimeter on US1 near Ludlan by Party City…AVOID!
