Plantation Teen Charged With Manslaughter

PLANTATION (CBS4) - A 17-year-old boy turned himself in to Plantation police on Friday to face charges in the shooting death of his best friend.

Dakota Alan Donovan, 18, was visiting four other teenage friends at a home in the 5200 block of Southwest 3rd Street in Plantation on Wednesday night when a gun went off, shooting him in the upper torso. Donovan was rushed to Broward General Medical Center where he died of his injuries, Plantation police said.

The teen surrendered to police with his attorney Lawrence Wolk at 3 p.m.
Plantation police arrested the 17-year-old on Friday and charged him with manslaughter, according to CBS4's news partner The Miami Herald.

The Broward State Attorney's Office will determine whether he will be tried as an adult or as a juvenile.

"He brought the firearm to the residence,'' Plantation police detective Philip Toman said.

But Toman said the shot fired was not intentional.

"They were playing around with it and it went off. It was not intentional,'' he said.

Wolk said his client attends Broward College.

"He has been very remorseful, crying all day and night, and slept with his parents last night,'' Wolk said, calling the shooting an accident.

The teen is being held at a juvenile facility in Fort Lauderdale.
