Vigil Held For Man Killed In Food Store Fight
MIAMI - (CBS4) - A candlelight vigil was held outside a Southwest Miami-Dade convenience store where a man was brutally beaten to death with a crowbar Thursday.
The vigil, organized by a friend of the victim, began at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Quick Shop at 9720 SW 168th Street in Miami.
A demonstration was held outside the store Friday night, and those attending said Akil Larue Oliver, 34, was beaten to death because he was black.
But Miami-Dade Police spokesman Roy Rutland said it was Oliver who went into the store at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and allegedly began verbally attacking the store owners, using racial slurs against them.
According to arrest records, Oliver allegedly called the clerk a racial slur, suggested he go back to his country and threatened to do unprintable things to his mother and sisters.
An off-duty Miami-Dade Corrections officer and other patrons tried to calm the situation down, and Oliver left the store.
It is suggested that Oliver's rage stemmed from money the clerk may owe him.
But Oliver came back a short time later and began his tirade once again. As he was being escorted out of the store by the corrections officer, Nabil Sulaiman, 19, allegedly armed himself with a bottle and hit him.
Police reports say three other employees became involved and as Oliver began to defend himself Ragheb M. Sulaiman, 24, allegedly hit him over the head with a crowbar, killing him.
The store's video camera has recorded the fight.
Ragheb Sulaiman was charged with Second Degree Murder and Nabil Sulaiman faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Both were in custody Friday.
Miami-Dade Police are investigating.
