S. Florida Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

FORT CAMPELL, Ky. (CBS4) ― A soldier from South Florida serving in Operation Enduring Freedom has died in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Department of Defense said 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Juan L. Rivadeneira, of Davie, died on November 13 in Kandahar province. He and two other soldiers were killed when an insurgent suicide bomber detonated a vest bomb.

Cpl. Jacob R. Carver, of Freeman, Mo., and Spc. Jacob C. Carroll, of Clemmons, N.C., were also killed in the attack. Both 20 years old, the DOD said.

Rivadeneira, Carver, and Carroll were based at Fort Campbell in Kentucky as members of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Rivadeneira joined the Army in 2003. He is survived by his wife and son, who live in Germany, and his mother, who lives in Venezuela.
