1 Dead Several Injured In Brownsville Shootings

Dozens of mothers in Brownsville filled the streets Saturday night to hold a candlelight vigil for a woman killed there Friday.

Family members said 21-year-old Diane Metelus was on her way home from the store next to her apartment when gunfire erupted.

Metelus was one of many hit by the bullets on the busy street. Neighbors say a toddler also was hit.

Lasonya Farrington, Metelus' aunt, pleads with the community to help find answers to why and how this happened.

"We have to come together as a community and we have to take a stand or we're gonna fall," Farrington said. "Don't let these young mens out here put fear into your heart. Come forward and do the right thing, please help us, please."

Metelus' family members sobbed under the candle light as they gathered around her makeshift memorial.

"She went out of her way for anything and anybody she was just very kind-hearted," said another aunt. "She really didn't deserve this. She has a 1-and-a-half year old son that's not yet two years old and now he has no mother it's just not right."

Women and mothers who didn't know Metelus also wiped tears away from their eyes, sickened by the ongoing violence in their communities.

Many of them pledged to work together to watch out for each other and report criminal behavior in the future.

Miami Dade Police have not released any information on this shooting.
